Reliving my Childhood in Fast Forward

Ow, and the list of the animations I've watched today keeps increasing! That's how you know this time of year has come once again... Or, rather, this time of the semester... Exams! Doing anything to avoid them! Reliving your childhood! The age you wished so hard to get away from once, but now are anxious to get back to. Well, even if to take small tastes, that's fine with me!

Of course, in my Childhood I used to watch them in VHS... DVDs did not exist then, yes I'm old. But, not THAT old!

Here are some of the best songs I've found today!

Childhood Nostalgia

Lately I've been missing my childhood years. And, today I relived them, even if just for a while. I watched Lion King 1 1/2, featuring Timon & Pumba, Hercules, Little Mermaid: The Beginning and finished with Lion King II. I liked very much the opening of that last movie, so here it is. Take a taste!

The Final Countdown!

A few months away from Catiana and Ed's wedding, and the preparations have already started. I've even already picked the dress and shoes I'm going to wear. Only a small detail left... Booking the airplane tickets and the hotel. Oh, and deciding if we're visiting both Cardiff and London. As I said, small. Real small...

Minus two days for our trip to begin!

Over-the-knee Boots

I don't know exactly when my love for thigh-high boots started, but I'm sure it was a long while ago. I remember being obsessed with my aunt's over-the-knee boots, so many years ago. I think before my cousin was born. 14 years ago, at least... Wow. And, my general obsession with shoes goes even more far.

Anyway, my point is that, while watching the eighth episode of the fourth season of The Nanny I totally fell in love with the boots she wore towards the end. I love their look, their lenth, everything. I so want them! Take a look at the video below. Seek out the moment 3:54.

So, I've been searching for my favorite boots on shops online. And, here's what I got.

Ooooh, I am in love with those. I absolutely want them. This colour is so unique. It's called Garnet. The black version is also good, though. You can find more colours and see more pictures on URBANOG.com

I like these, because they are a bit witch-like, aren't they? Hehe. On snaz75.com

Those are cool, too, but not really for me. On ebay.com

Supernatural Obsession

I remember back when I first found out that The Sims 2: Pets (yep, I'm a very old SimLover) was going to be released,  it was like a dream coming true!
I felt like everything was complete about the game.

I could control my Sims' lives, and make them all they could probably be, but something was missing. That was the animals.
Growing up, I always wanted a pet, and that wish was no different for my Sims' lives.

Of course, after the release, and many many years later, after the release of The Sims 3: Pets, I find it quite common for my Sims to have pets, and many kinds of animals. Sometimes I even find it irritating.

So, I've found something else to obsess over. What's that? Of course, The Sims 3: Supernatural!
Now I realize that this expansion is something more than just a dream coming true!

I never even had dared to think that my Sims could turn into Werewolves!

I've been used to the idea of Ghosts, Vampires and Witches by other The Sims installations.
But, Fairies and Zombies? And, Genies, if the rumors are correct?
Wow!

I'm so excited, I just can't wait for September to come. Ugh. And it's summer!
On the bright side, I wouldn't be able to play much before September, even if it was released now, so it's ok for me!

I have even read the same things about new features over and over again!
Today I found this article on http://simsvip.com/?p=11803. I'm swooning...

And here's my S3 Supernatural collage:

Discourse Analysis (DA)

Discourse analysis (DA), or discourse studies, is a general term for a number of approaches to analyzing written, spoken, signed language use or any significant semiotic event.

The objects of discourse analysis — discourse, writing, conversation, communicative event, etc. — are variously defined in terms of coherent sequences of sentences, propositions, speech acts or turns-at-talk. Contrary to much of traditional linguistics, discourse analysts not only study language use 'beyond the sentence boundary', but also prefer to analyze 'naturally occurring' language use, and not invented examples. Text linguistics is related. The essential difference between discourse analysis and text linguistics is that it aims at revealing socio-psychological characteristics of a person/persons rather than text structure.[1]

Discourse analysis has been taken up in a variety of social science disciplines, including linguistics, sociology, anthropology, social work, cognitive psychology, social psychology, international relations, human geography, communication studies, and translation studies, each of which is subject to its own assumptions, dimensions of analysis, and methodologies.

The following are some of the specific theoretical perspectives and analytical approaches used in linguistic discourse analysis:

Psychology of Fiction

So, lately I've been very interesting in the subject of Psychology of Fiction.
This research area includes diagnosing the fictional characters you read about.
I would love to actually do this with many of my favorite, or not, characters!
It's so interesting!

Also, it can be very helpful.
According to DeFife "when people find out that someone is a psychologist, the first thing they usually say is: "That's cool." This is followed by: "Uh oh, you're analyzing me right now," (and usually we are), or "You know, I took a college course/got an undergraduate degree in psychology" (worth major academic street cred), or "Hey, I bet you can read my mind," (ESP being one of the required courses in psychology graduate school).  Next, they want to hear how one would diagnose their friend/family member/self/dog.
[...]
Talking about famous figures that almost everybody knows something about is one way that psychologists might try to avoid this conundrum. Unfortunately, it's not ethical for psychologists to diagnose people they've never met or interviewed. It's not polite either, because no one wants to be called things by people they've never met. [...]

Fictional characters, on the other hand, are ideal targets for psychologists to diagnose with mental illnesses or personality defects. Diagnosing fictional characters is fun (because people love good fictional characters), allows the public to learn about mental illnesses which they may or may not have, and offers opportunities for psychologists to feel smart and get public recognition. Everybody wins. Except for the fictional characters who might get a bad reputation, but they don't have their feelings hurt by such discussions."

{Written in PsychologyToday.com with the title Stuff Psychologists Like - Diagnosing Fictional Characters  by

More interesting diagnoses about well-known fictional people can be found at quora.com and specifically at the thread http://www.quora.com/Which-epic-fictional-characters-show-classic-symptoms-of-psychological-disorders with some awesome examples such as
  • Cornelius Fudge in Harry Potter: Paranoia
  • Severus Snape in Harry Potter: Schizoid

  • Another interesting factor that can be discussed is how people subconsciously become their favorite fictional characters, according to http://www.medicaldaily.com/news/20120514/9878/book-reading-experience-taking-psychology-character-fiction.htm
Psychologists have discovered that while reading a book or story, people are prone to subconsciously adopt their behavior, thoughts, beliefs and internal responses to that of fictional characters as if they were their own

There is also a book about Dexter, the famous protagonist of the homonymous popular TV series.
It's called The Psychology of Dexter, and is written by Bella DePaulo.
I totally plan on reading it soon.
After watching the series, of course, because I've noticed by reading the reviews that many spoilers appear on the book.

All in all, I find the whole subject of psychology of fiction very interesting.
I totally plan on researching it more.

    Dream On

So, I found an app that can supposedlyinfluence dreams.
I think it could be possible, although I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

    The Science Behind Dream:ON
Not all sleep is the same.
Research has shown that most of our dreams occur during REM Sleep, and also that your mind is particularly alert to other senses during this stage of sleep. Dream:ON plays the 'SoundScape' to your subconscious during REM.

Almost everyone dreams several times each night. However, research suggests that people vary in their ability to incorporate the Soundscapes into their dreams and it may take several nights before Dream:ON is effective.

    http://www.dreamonapp.com/

Hopefully, I will try it soon myself and will come back with the results it had on me.

And, a song with this title by the legendary Aerosmith...

    American Shorthair / Egyptian Mau

So, my friend showed me today a dog of the breed Akina Inu.
    She wants to buy one.

Anyway, I was searching for cat breeds and decided that I just love the American Shorthair

    and the Egyptian Mau.

Ow, so cute, so elegant! I want one of them (or, both)!
My only fear about cats, in general, is about their fur and how harmful it can prove to be.
    Especially for kids.

    * Note:
I also happened to find some absolutely awesome apps for iPhone, iPad and iTouch.
Take a look at the Cat Piano and the Human-to-Cat Translator.

    Suspended Animation

Suspended animation is the slowing of life processes by external means without termination. Breathing, heartbeat, and other involuntary functions may still occur, but they can only be detected by artificial means. Extreme cold can be used to precipitate the slowing of an individual's functions; use of this process has led to the developing science of cryonics. Cryonics is another method of life preservation but it cryopreserves organisms using liquid nitrogen that will preserve the organism until reanimation. Laina Beasley was kept in suspended animation as a two-celled embryo for 13 years.
Placing astronauts in suspended animation has been proposed as one way for an individual to reach the end of an interstellar or intergalactic journey, avoiding the necessity for a gigantic generation ship; occasionally the two concepts have been combined, with generations of "caretakers" supervising a large population of frozen passengers.
Since the 1970s, induced hypothermia has been performed for some open-heart surgeries as an alternative to heart-lung machines. Hypothermia, however, provides only a limited amount of time in which to operate and there is a risk of tissue and brain damage for prolonged periods.

    Experiments

    Temperature-induced

In June 2005 scientists at the University of Pittsburgh's Safar Center for Resuscitation Research announced they had managed to place dogs in suspended animation and bring them back to life, most of them without brain damage, by draining the blood out of the dogs' bodies and injecting a low temperature solution into their circulatory systems, which in turn keeps the bodies alive in stasis. After three hours of being clinically dead, the dogs' blood was returned to their circulatory systems, and the animals were revived by delivering an electric shock to their hearts. The heart started pumping the blood around the frozen body, and the dogs were brought back to life.
While most of the dogs were fine, a few of the revived dogs had severe nervous and movement coordination damage, causing them to be mentally disabled, and demonstrating behavior that was deemed "zombie" like. This has been pushed further by the media which named them "zombie dogs". There is concern that using this technique on humans could result in brain damage similar to that suffered by some of the dogs in the experiment. In extreme cases, doctors can now use induced hypothermia which reduces brain and heart activity to a minimum. This gives doctors more time to heal or diagnose a patient.
On 20 January 2006, doctors from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston announced they had placed pigs in suspended animation with a similar technique. The pigs were anaesthetised and major blood loss was induced. After the pigs lost about half their blood the remaining blood was replaced with a chilled saline solution. As the body temperature reached 10 °C (50 °F) the damaged blood vessel was repaired and the blood was returned. The method was tested 200 times with a 90% success rate.

    Chemically induced

An article in the 22 April 2005 issue of the scientific journal Science reports success towards inducing suspended animation-like hypothermia in mice. The findings are significant, as mice do not hibernate in nature. The laboratory of Mark B. Roth at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, placed the mice in a chamber containing 80 ppm hydrogen sulfide for a duration of 6 hours. The core body temperature of the mice dropped to 13 degrees Celsius and metabolism, as assayed by carbon dioxide production and oxygen use, decreased 10-fold.They also induced hypoxia on nematode embryos and zebrafish embryos, placing them in suspended animation for hours, and then re-animating them simply by returning the oxygen to the embryos.
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston announced they had been able to hibernate mice using the same method. Their heart rate was slowed down from 500 to 200 beats per minute, respiration fell from 120 to 25 breaths per minute and body temperature dropped to 30°C (natural: 39°C). After 2 hours of breathing air without hydrogen sulfide the mice returned to normal. Further studies are needed to see if the gas had damaging effects on the brain, considering the effect of hydrogen sulfide on the body is similar to hydrogen cyanide; it does not slow the metabolic rate but rather inhibits the transfer of energy within the cell via ATP ("It forms a complex bond with iron in the mitochondrial cytochrome enzymes, thus preventing cellular respiration." quoted from 'Hydrogen sulfide' - Wikipedia).
Experiments on sedated sheep and partially ventilated anesthetized pigs have been unsuccessful, suggesting that application to large mammals may not be feasible.

    Hibernation

There are many research projects currently investigating how to achieve "induced hibernation" in humans. This ability to hibernate humans would be useful for a number of reasons, such as saving the lives of seriously ill or injured people by temporarily putting them in a state of hibernation until treatment can be given.
There are cases of accidental human hibernation. The most recent is the case of Mitsutaka Uchikoshi, a Japanese man who survived the cold for 24 days in 2006 without food or water when he fell into a hypothermic state similar to hibernation

    A Tango Lover

Dance at Bougival 1882–1883, (woman at left is painter Suzanne Valadon)

Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) must have been a  real tango lover, seeing as he painted three different paintings of couples dancing tango in a closed position.
    How interesting!

    Tango remade songs

So, I've already happened to mention that this semester I attended some lessons of tango that were given to my Uni.

So, we were listening to and dancing many awesome songs.

Some of them happened to be remakes of a variety of songs I've loved.

Take as an example this amazing remake of Roxanne first heard in the movie Moulin Rouge.
I'm totally planning on watching it. It will be definitely worth it.

And, then of course it's this sweet sweet remake of Enjoy the Silence that I just seem to not be able to stop listening to. Wow. Tanghetto has done some great work there. And, this classic Depeche Mode song isn't the only one that has been remade. Tanghetto has also made a tango version of Sweet Dreams . How awesome is that?

I didn't want to make the post too crowded with videos, but you should totally check out more of tango remakes.

    11:05:59User: Why?
11:06:01Cleverbot: Because it's polite to make people think you care about their well being.
11:06:27User: What do physics have to do with other people's well being?
    11:06:33Cleverbot: Nothing.
11:06:42User: So, why did you mention it?
    11:06:48Cleverbot: You mentioned it!

    Why Date An Illiterate Girl
