My Wand

Browsing through my posts, I happened to find this one, which concerns the quiz of the Wand Selector provided by Pottermore.

My wand according to J.K.Rowling was

Length: 12 1/2 in

Wood: Aspen
Core: Dragon

Flexibility: Unbending

(You can find out more about the interpretation of these materials here.)

That made me feel nostalgic about Pottermore and I tried to get back to the site and explore a bit. So, imagine my surprise when I found out that this awesome site was no longer the same. It was changed so drastically and in such a sudden way that I found myself to be a little baffled.

Yes, I hadn't really cared to visit for a very long time, but for it to no longer exist, it was quite the shock. Now it's just a collection of articles about the Harry Potter World. So much less interesting. No longer Houses, Wands, House Cups, Spells, Duels, Brewing of Potions.
It is actually a little sad.

Anyway, I originally started this post, to talk about the fact that, back when I wrote the first post I mention right in my first sentence, I had found out about an another Wand Selector, the one made by GreenOak, apparently. It can be found here.

Since this site still functions normally, I decided to take the quiz. And, my results were the following:

As for the interpretations? Read on!

And, finally, let me post a message from the Creator of this Wand Selector.

The American Magical School

 Salem Witches Institute

Salem Witches Institute is a wizarding school located just outside of Salem, Massachusetts. The school resides in a forested area, hidden from muggles. It is a co-ed institution for young witches and wizards aged 12-18. It is the most prestigous magical school in America, so it is considered a great honor for students to attend. Started as a finishing school for young ladies studying magic, the school now houses both genders and has a strong focus on culture and arts.

There are 5 surrounding buildings, each two floors and assigned a name relavant to it's location on the campus or it's purpose for the institute.

The North Building: History of Magic, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Ancient Runes.
The South Building: Transfiguration, Charms, Muggle Studies.
The East Building: Potions, Astronomy, Arithmancy.
The South Building: Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures.
Assembly and Arts Building: Theatre, Painting, Dance, and Music. This building features an attached auditorium, ballroom, and gallery for exhibitions and performances.

Students reside in three dormitory buildings according to their Fellowship. These dormitories are located to the right of the main building. Each is two stories with the bottom floor serving as a common lounge and the top floor containing bedrooms. Each student shares a room with one other student.

Curriculum

The academy has most of the core subjects of other magical institutes, with the addition of four artistic courses. Students must choose one of these courses to study throughout their time at school. In the third year students may choose to take on an additional arts course or select an alternative one to study for the remaining years.

    Potions Class
    Transfiguration
    Defence against the Dark Arts
    Herbology
    Muggle Studies

Enrollment

Students begin at Salem Witches Institute at the age of 12 and continue until they have complete seven academic years. During their stay, each student is sorted into one of the three Fellowships following an interview the headmistress.

Lotus Fellowship: Values honesty, loyalty, and hard work. They are represented by the color white and a lotus flower.
Ivy Fellowship: Values cunning, intellect, and creativity. They are represented by the color green and an ivy leaf.

At the beginning of each year, one 7th year student from each Fellowship is chosen to act as Head Girl. Note that this was until recently an all-girls school, thus the feminine title. If a male student is chosen from his fellowship, he is referred to as Head Boy.

Students may earn merits and demerits during their time at Salem. Those students with the most points at the end of each year are given a special treat chosen by the headmistress.

The Japanese Magical School

Mahoutokoro University of Witchcraft & Wizardry

Mahoutokoro University of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the main Japanese school of magic. It is located on the small island of Nakano-shima in the Sea of Japan, which is also home to one of the few wizarding communities in the country. Mahoutokoro University’s houses are divided in to colors: The Red Dragon, the Yellow Kitsune, and the Blue Kappas. The Dragons celebrate Honor and Courage, the Kitsune celebrate Cunning and Wit, and the Kappas celebrate Wisdom and Patience. Students are instructed in very rigid fashion with high pressure due to inter house and peer competition.

Curriculum

Many classes are available at Mahoutokoro, some which are mandated at most schools, and others that are exclusive to the school. Courses listed with a * are mandatory for students at some point throughout their school career.

    Arithmancy
    Astrology*
    Care of Magical Creatures
    Charms*
    Defense Against the Dark Arts*
    Divination
    Flying* (For first years)
    Asian History*
    History of Magic
    Martial Arts*
    Muggle Studies
    Potions*
    Transfiguration*

Extracurriculars

Clubs at Mahoutokoro are similar to those at most schools, with a few unique additions.

Quidditch Club - Students skirmish amongst themselves, learn new skills, and play matches against other schools.
Dueling Club - Students are taught to duel in the practice of the ancient Japanese wizards, and are instilled with a strong sense of honor, as well as valuable life skills.
Judo Club - This martial arts club meets on Saturdays in order to improve their skills in Judo and foster discipline and strength of the mind and body.
Kendo Club - This martial arts club meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays to practice Kendo and participate in sparring matches against other students of their levels.

Enrollment

Mahoutokoro, similar to Hogwarts, operates on a birth record system where students are invited to attend after their names have been recorded on a special list. Students can also submit an essay, a letter of request from a parent, and a primary school record to be considered for acceptance if their name is not already on the list.

Students may enroll if they were born and/or raised for at least five years in any Asian country - such as Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. Japanese is the primary language of the school, although students are required to be proficient in conversational English before the beginning of their first term.

Uniform

Mahoutokoro faculty and students uphold a level of honor and dignity in their uniforms. All students are required to have both common school robes and dress robes.

The Mahoutokoro uniform consists of robes which match the students' respective houses:

    Crimson for Red Dragons
    Gold for Yellow Kitsunes
    Royal blue for Blue Kappas.

In the winter, students also are equipped with warm cloaks in standard black.

The Scottish Magical School

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the main magical institute of United Kingdom. It is located in a forested area in the highlands of Scotland next to a large lake. If muggles approach the school, it will appear only as a run-down and abandoned building with a sign reading 'Do Not Enter'. It is also unplottable on a map. On the Hogwarts crest is their motto, "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus," which means "Never tickle a sleeping dragon." The current headmaster is Professor Albus Dumbledore.

Curriculum

In their first and second years, students are required to take a set course list including:

  • Astronomy
  • Charms
  • Defense Against the Dark Arts
  • Herbology
  • History of Magic
  • Flying (for first years)
  • Potions
  • Transfiguration

Starting in third year, students may choose any two additional courses each year:

  • Ancient Runes
  • Arithmancy
  • Care of Magical Creatures
  • Divination
  • Dueling
  • Muggle Studies

Exams are held in June of each year for the first four years. In June of their fifth year, students take the Ordinary Wizarding Levels (O.W.L.s). The results of these exams determine what classes the student may take in their sixth and seventh years. The classes during these years are at advances levels and require a certain grade on the O.W.L.s for students to continue with these subjects. Even if a student achieves the required grade for an advanced class, they may choose not to take the class. The passing grades for the O.W.L.s are Outstanding (O), Exceeds Expectations (E), and Acceptable (A). The failing grades are Poor (P), Dreadful (D), and Troll (T).

After their seventh year, students take Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests (N.E.W.T.s).

During the school year students can gain or lose points for their house. At the end-of-term feast, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup for the following year. Only professors and prefects are allowed to award and dock points. If merely taking away house points is not sufficient, professors can give students a detention of their choosing.

Extracurriculars

  • Quidditch Club - Each house has it's own team, allowing for matches between the houses. Matches are held once a month or so, except during busy times, and resulting in a final House Cup tournament at the end of the year.

  • Gobstones Club - Meeting regularly after lunch, come hang out in the great hall and play this fun magical board game! A great way to get to know your fellow students.

  • Prefect Club - Top achievers in years five through seven are selected to serve in the Prefect Club, helping to maintain order in the school and patrol the halls.

  • Cryptology Club - Come have a cup of tea with your favorite professor and learn the techniques and history of this clever code.

In addition to school clubs, periodic weekend visits to the local village of Hogsmeade are scheduled to allow students to socialize off campus, enjoy the local restaurants, and go shopping.

 Enrollment

Students who have received an acceptance letter begin at Hogwarts School at the age of 11. They continue until they have completed seven academic years. During their stay, each is sorted into one of four houses - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. No applications are accepted for Hogwarts, as students' names are recorded at birth.

Uniform

Students at Hogwarts are required to follow a strict dress code when attending classes and other school-related events. This includes:

  • White Buttoned Dress Shirt.
  • A gray vest with a color matching their house colors (worn during the colder months).
  • A tie also bearing their house colors
  • A pleated black skirt for girls and black dress trousers for boys.
  • A black robe bearing their house's emblem.

  • Black dress robes (for formal occasions).
  • A scarf bearing their house colors is also given during the colder months.

The Norwegian Magical School

Durmstrang Institute for Magical Learning

Durmstrang Institute is the primary magical education facility in Norway, as well as the most prominent in the Scandinavian region. Much like Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, it is unplottable and disguised so that muggles and those wizards who do not know its location will be unable to locate it. Durmstrang offers schooling over the course of seven years, the first year being for those students who are eleven years of age. Durmstrang is a co-educational school that accommodates both male and female students. The students are separated into years instead of houses (i.e. First year students have their own dorm, second years have their own, etc.). However, the institute does not accept Muggle-born students and halfbloods are accepted by the skin of their teeth. The school is known for its emphasis on the instruction of Dark Arts rather than defense against them.

Curriculum

The academy has most of the core subjects of other magical institutes, with slight variations/exclusions:

  • Arithmancy
  • Astrology*
  • Care of Magical Creatures
  • Charms*
  • Divination
  • Flying* (For first years)
  • History of Magic
  • Potions*
  • Transfiguration*
  • Practical Application of the Dark Arts

Extracurriculars

Clubs at Durmstrang are similar to those at most schools, with a few unique additions.

  • Quidditch Club - Students skirmish amongst themselves, learn new skills, and play matches against other schools.

  • Gobstones Club - Fans of the popular wizarding board game can hone their skills and enjoy a good time playing this game every so often.

  • Dueling Club - Students meet weekly to practice their hexes and jinxes.

Enrollment

Durmstrang accepts students strictly on an application basis. Students must first show notable blood status (ie: no muggle borns are accepted, nor students from predominantly muggle bloodlines.) Priority is given to pureblood students and those who can prove they are from notable families. Once considered, they must submit to an interview with the headmaster and perform a simple spell that helps prove their magical ability. Students are informed of the spell well in advance so that they can practice, and parents are expected to give their children as full of a magical education at home as possible, with minimal participation in muggle institutions.

Students may enroll from any country, but priority is given to students in Germany, Poland, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria and of course the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and so on. The validity of these statements has been questioned over time, but Durmstrang Officials uphold the national favoritism in honor of tradition. All students are required to learn conversational English before attending, and though all lessons are taught in English, students have the option of bringing textbooks of their own native language.

Uniform

Ladies' Uniforms consist of:

  • Blood-red robes
  • Brown pants
  • Black or red blouses
  • Brown coat (with school emblem on lapel)
  • Boots

Optional:
  • Fur accessories (such as hats)

Gentlemens' Uniforms consist of:

  • Blood-red robes
  • Brown pants
  • Black, red or brown shirts
  • Brown belt (with school emblem)
  • Brown coat (with school emblem on lapel)
  • Boots

Optional:
  • Fur accessories (such as hats)
  • Wooden Staffs

The Egyptian Magical School

Blessed Isis Temple of Spells

Blessed Isis Temple of Spells has been a place for folks to learn magic since the early days of the Egyptian Gods, but was only made an official school of magic in the past 900 years or so. Isis was the ancient goddess of magic; and though she is not revered as so important in modern times, she is the reason the school was developed, so that students may practice their talents in testament to the goddess herself.

Like most schools, students at Blessed Isis begin schooling at age 11, however the term does not start until September 11, the first day of the month of Thout, which coincides with the season of Akhet. Students spend the fourth month of Akhet (Koaik) on break, from December 10 to January 8, and resume lessons on the first day of the month of Tobi, which is the first month of the season Peret. School lets out for a summer break over the season of Shemu, beginning on June 9, which is the season of the harvest.

Curriculum

The lessons taught in the temple focus on more ancient magic, although some traditional courses are also offered. Students are allowed to study any combination of eight classes through fifth year, and may choose to focus on only four more intensive courses in their sixth and seventh year. Students who are accepted into the House of the Sun in their final years may instead pick a single course of study to focus on, attending lessons, an apprenticeship, and up to two optional elective courses.

  • Arithmancy
  • Astronomy
  • Basic Crafting (Wands, Staves)
  • Basic Runes & Glyphs
  • Charms
  • Defense Against the Dark Arts
  • Herbology
  • History of Magic
  • Pantheon Studies
  • Potions
  • Transfiguration

Intermediate courses are available to 6th and 7th year students only. Each of the courses listed as intermediate can also be taken at Advanced level for those students in House of the Sun.

  • Intermediate Wandcrafting
  • Intermediate Carving (Staves)
  • Intermediate Runes
  • Intermediate Glyphs
  • Intermediate Potions
  • Intermediate Transfiguration

Extracurriculars

  • Quidditch Club - This club gathers to practice their skills and play against each other, and occasionally play against other schools.

  • Crafter's Allegiance - Students in higher years of schooling may participate in this club for aspiring crafters of magical artifacts, such as wands and staves.

  • Keepers of the Oasis - An elite club comprising of students with exemplary grades in year three and above. These students are prospective members of House of the Sun, and in exchange for helping to keep the oasis area clean and patrolling the area at night (similar to prefect patrols at Hogwarts,) they are permitted to have an extra study session each day instead of taking a full roster of classes, in order to focus more on their studies and not be overloaded with coursework.

Enrollment

Many of the students attending Blessed Isis come from a long line of magical relatives who also attended the school. Students enroll at age 11 and may attend only if a member of their family tree had been enrolled in the past. Each year, a limited number of students from outside the usual family lines are accepted on application only if they can exhibit sufficient magical prowess. A select number of sixth and seventh year students are also accepted on transfer each year if they wish to pursue an apprenticeship or focus studies in crafting or rune/glyph work.

Arrival at the school happens by way of caravan from the nearby city of Cairo - boarding into carriages and on camelback where they will ride out to the temple in the cover of night. This trip is referred to as the Journey of a Thousand Stars, and while upper-grade students are given the option of arriving by broom or apparation to the front gate, many choose to take the Journey due to the excitement of it all.

Students are placed in one of two houses upon their arrival at the school, the House of the Sea or the House of the Desert. While no one is entirely positive what the values are for each house, due to the ancient nature of their founding, they are selected at midnight following the Journey of a Thousand Stars, as new students are led to the grand staircase before their peers - at least, those who choose to watch a ritual held so late at night. Students are requested to put their hands on either side of a sun dial engraved with runes, that in the dark of night will illuminate in either a shade of blue with the shadow pointing towards the east, or a shade of green with the shadow pointing towards the west.

After achieving an exemplary score on their exams in the fifth year, students are invited to the sun dial once more. As the exam results arrive during harvest season, those students who scored high enough may be invited back to the school in mid-July for the Sun Ceremony, at which point they place their hands on the dial once more at the height of the sun's movement for the day. If the runes on the dial begin to glow, the student has been accepted by the gods and may continue their studies into more advanced magic in the House of the Sun. If not, they must continue at intermediate level in their original houses. Students who do not make it prior to their sixth year may try again at the Sun Ceremony preceding their seventh year.

Uniform

Students uniforms consist of loose white or ivory robes, wrapped similar to togas, secured by a navy colored silk cord at the waist. Houses are denoted by a pure silver cartouche pin above the left breast, and are tinted an earthy green for Desert students, wtih a sky blue for those of the house of the Sea. Each cartouche pin also has the name of the house engraved in heiroglyphics. Hats are not permitted during lessons, but students are welcome to wear jewelry and other adornments if they so choose.

Those who are accepted into the House of the Sun are given a cartouche pin that is golden instead of the silvery-green or silvery-blue of the other houses. Seventh year students, who have senority over the rest, are given a golden cord in their final year at the school to denote their status.

Sandals are required only in the dining area, greenhouses, and while playing Quidditch, with bare feet being acceptable elsewhere. Professors may choose to require footwear in their classrooms if they so desire.

Professors uniforms are identical to students, except that they are required to wear wine colored robes instead of white or ivory. Professors are traditionally given a silver cord, however those that are alumni of Blessed Isis are permitted to wear their golden cord given to them in their seventh year. Professors who were previously in the House of the Sun are also permitted to wear their golden cartouche pin, as it is considered a great honor to have studied in that house.

Hmm, Gryffindor?

I found another sorting quiz today.
Go to http://interactive.mugglenet.com/mni/index.php?action=sort and answer the 20 questions, too, if you'd like.

By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
would always be the best;
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
And power-hungry Slytherin
loved those of great ambition.

Congratulations! You are most like Arthur and you belong in Gryffindor.
You may now proceed to the Gryffindor common room, where you can participate in games and discussions with your fellow Housemates. Participate in the House Cup Competition to earn points for your House and help Gryffindor win the House Cup!

Go Hufflepuff

Well, as I've mentioned multiple times, I'm a totally proud Slytherin.
I don't know if I'm cunning or if I have every single aspect that stereotypically is given to every Slytherin, but I certainly have othercharacteristics that are totally Slytherin-like.
Anyway, I sorted my parents two, or, three, days ago and my Dad is also a Slytherin, while my Mum is a Hufflepuff. Hehe, I found it cool.

Anyway, even if my mum wasn't sorted into this house, I would encourage Puffs to get more points on Pottermore, and as you can realize I'm extremely excited about the "fight" going on for the second place right now.

Slytherin is first with almost 3,7 million points.

And, suddenly three days ago, or so, Hufflepuff started getting so many points they took the second place! They were in that position for two days, when a frustrated Ravenclaw decided they had been left too far behind for too long. So, an extreme fighting begun, with Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff competing for the second place, and Gryffindor being left fourth.

So, right now the points for the rest of the three houses are approximately like this:

Ravenclaw is second with 3,58 million points.
Hufflepuff third with 3,57 million points.
And, Gryffindor last with 3,56 million points.

Let's see what the ranking will be in a bit.
They change by the minute.
It's extremely interesting to watch! As a Slytherin, of course!

Sorting Hat Song

This is the song on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can top them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a steady mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!

Slytherin is the Inaugural Winner!

Pottermore transformed the Great Hall in honor of the announcement of the Pottermore House Cup winner, Slytherin.

Just as the clock passed 9:07am this morning in London, Pottermore announced the winner of its inaugural House Cup competition.
And the winner is… Slytherin!

FINAL STANDINGS:

1st Place: Slytherin - 74,290,864 points
2nd Place: Gryffindor - 74,069,919 points
3rd Place: Ravenclaw - 71,815,917 points
4th Place: Hufflepuff - 62,596,368 points

When Pottermore announced the Pottermore House Cup competition a few weeks ago, users new and old came back and millions of points were earned over the course of the competition. Users of all houses were constantly dueling and brewing potions. Pottermore users have been speculating on Twitter on who the winner would be. When the race clearly turned out to be between Slytherin and Gryffindor, many sided with the snakes because of Gryffindor’s winning streak in the books. They made sure Gryffindor wouldn’t win by either dueling Gryffindor or purposely losing to Slytherin. This made it a very tight race, but in the end, the snakes defeated the lions, and Slytherin won!
In honor of the victory, Pottermore transformed the previously purple Great Hall banners into green. You can see how the Great Hall looks in the picture on the right, above.

Upadate: The Pottermore Insider updated with a new post, congratulating Slytherin and addressing the mysterious “‘secret’ bonus” they promised to the winning house.
Here’s what they had to say:
We are delighted to announce that you can visit the Great Hall to view the award ceremony for the inaugural Pottermore House Cup.
Thank you to all houses for making this such a spirited contest.
We will be congratulating the winner in further detail, here on the Pottermore Insider tomorrow but in the meantime, good luck to all and enjoy the ceremony!
It looks like Slytherin will be receiving their well-earned prize tomorrow. We’ll have the latest of information as soon as it is released, so stay tuned.

Enjoy the festivities!

This is a developing story. We will be continuously updating it throughout the day. Stay tuned to our Twitter, @PottermoreNews7 for all the latest information

Pottermore Quidditch Poll

Keeper, Chaser, Beater or Seeker?

‘’Three Chasers try and score with the Quaffle; the Keeper guards the goalposts; the Beaters keep the Bludgers away from their team,’ Harry reeled off.
‘Very good,’ said Wood.
‘Er – have the Bludgers ever killed anyone?’ Harry asked, hoping he sounded offhand.
‘Never at Hogwarts. We’ve had a couple of broken jaws but nothing worse than that. Now, the last member of the team is the Seeker.’’

- Chapter Ten, Hallowe’en, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

In Chapter Ten of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry learns about the Bludgers, the Quaffle, the Golden Snitch, and the various positions on a Quidditch team. We’ve seen lots of comments on Pottermore about Quidditch; given the choice, which position would you most like to play?

You have 4 days to vote and we’ll reveal the most favoured Quidditch position on the Pottermore Insider soon after.

From barn owls to potions

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been revealing some interesting facts about Pottermore on our Twitter account, including the most popular wizard pet (the barn owl), the most purchased item (pewter cauldron, size 2), and the item that’s gifted more often than any other (unicorn horn).

The Full Body-Bind has been cast successfully over 47,000,000 times – although there have only been 402,426 successful attempts at the Pimple Jinx.

Curious about who has posted the largest number of comments on Pottermore? To date, WillowSword90 (Ravenclaw) has posted an impressive 43,158 comments in the Moments, the Great Hall and their common room.

Lots of you have been attempting to brew potions; the most popular being the Wideye or Awakening Potion and the least popular being Herbicide. (ErisedHazel197 (Slytherin) is currently the most accomplished potion brewer on Pottermore – so far they’ve managed to brew 2,073 potions successfully!)

The School Uniform

The Hogwarts School Uniform is required to be worn during daytime classes. It consists of a set of black robes with the student’s house crest emblazoned onto the left lapel. Underneath the school robes there are black trousers/skirt, a white shirt and a school tie (usually with the students house colours on it). A grey jumper may be worn over the shirt and tie, and black shoes are required. In the case of female students, black tights or socks are worn with the skirt.

A black pointed hat is worn during the day, and is a part of the official uniform requirements sent to all new students before their first term. In winter, a black cloak with silver fastenings can be worn over the robes.

Students are permitted to wear their own clothes outside official school hours.
